Why do I need to grant accessibility permission?

Android only lets apps detect "which app is in the foreground" through the Accessibility Service API. That's the only way Vocablock can know you just opened Instagram so it can pop up a quiz. The service does not read any content — only package names.

Why the overlay permission?

So the quiz window can appear on top of the app you just opened. Without this, the quiz would only be able to appear while Vocablock itself is in the foreground — defeating the purpose.

I granted permissions but no quizzes are appearing

Three things to check:

• Open App Locks in Vocablock and confirm at least one app is enabled (toggle switched on).
• In Android Settings → Accessibility, confirm Vocablock is still listed as "On". Some Android skins disable accessibility services on reboot or when battery saver kicks in.
• Open Settings → Timing → Enable cooldown in Vocablock. If you just answered a quiz, the cooldown timer may be blocking the next one. Turn it off or set it lower to test.

My words disappeared after an update

That shouldn't happen — we added database migrations specifically to prevent this. If it does, email us with your Android version and what the app version was before the update, and we'll investigate. In the meantime, if you used Settings → Data → Export backup before, you can restore from that file via Import backup.

Quiz gets stuck / overlay won't close

If the overlay ever refuses to dismiss, answer the question (or force-stop Vocablock from Android Settings → Apps → Vocablock → Force stop). This is rare; if it happens more than once please email a description of when it occurred.

Importing and managing words

What CSV format should I use?

Two columns, no header row:
english,translation
Example:

hello,bonjour
world,monde
thanks,merci

Can I tag my own words with CEFR levels?

Yes — in Word Bank, long-press a word to enter selection mode, select any number of words, then tap the graduation-cap icon in the top bar to set their level. Or edit a word individually and pick a level in the dialog.

Data and privacy

Where is my data stored?

Entirely on your device, in Android's private app sandbox. No servers, no accounts. See our privacy policy for full detail.

Will I lose my data if I uninstall?

Yes — uninstalling wipes the local database. Export a backup first (Settings → Data → Export backup) and keep the JSON file somewhere safe (Google Drive, email, etc.). You can import it after a reinstall.

Why do I see ads?

Banner ads keep Vocablock free. They're limited to a few screens (Home, Word Bank, Stats) and never appear inside the quiz overlay or during onboarding.
